Practical diets and stocking densities in the cultivation of juvenile Centropomus poeyi

Abstract

Two 60-day experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of different diets and stocking densities on juvenile Centropomus poeyi. Three diets were tested: poultry by-product meal (POU), pork by-product meal (POR), and a commercial control diet (CD). The pork by-product meal diet yielded the highest final weight (12.48 g ± 3.54) and total length (11.83 cm ± 1.18), with survival rates across treatments ranging from 75% to 95%. In the second experiment, three stocking densities were assessed using the optimal diet from the first experiment. The highest density resulted in the greatest weight gain (18.52 g ± 4.42) and average length (13.55 cm ± 0.91), with survival rates ranging from 94.44% to 100%. These findings suggest that pork by-product meal may be a promising ingredient for juvenile C. poeyi diets under the conditions evaluated, and that juveniles can be managed at a density of 12 fish/. However, this density should be further evaluated in relation to the experimental duration and the system's carrying capacity.
