A new record for freshwater environments is reported in six organisms of the native species Mayaheros urophthalmus collected in the municipality of Balancán, Tabasco, Mexico. It represents the first record of this viral lymphocytic infection in a native cichlid of economic and ecological importance. Its presence indicates the status of aquaculture health in the area, due to the time of year, its incidence or degree of infection responds to its environmental distribution influenced by temperature, stress and environmental contamination.
